Sailing in Alonissos
The island of Alonissos is the east most island in the North Sporades, and also the greenest, with a stunning landscape of rich vegetation and thriving nature and wildlife. It is a long narrow island that has a number of nearby islets to the east.
If you are looking for a holiday destination in Greece that promises pure peace and tranquility, as well as absolutely beautiful scenery and landscapes, then Alonissos is the island you need to visit.
The first national sea park in Greece was established on Alonissos and it is home to the famous "Monachus-Monachus" Mediterranean monk seal. The sea park was created to offer protection to this unique animal. There are also many other species of wildlife found on the island including hawks, goats and sea gulls.
There are a number of interesting places to visit on the island, including the capital town of Chora, which is a very traditional and authentic village that offers a fascinating insight into the years gone by. In the town is the old castle that was used to protect the villagers from hostile attacks in the middle ages.
Alonissos is a true paradise in the Aegean, and visitors here are rewarded with very relaxing and enjoyable holidays. Though the main season for tourism is the summer season, it is a beautiful island to visit any time of the year.
